The 1908 Virginia #2282 offered here today is a white on black porcelain enamel license plate in untouched all original condition. #2282 was clearly issued and shows signs from period use. Measuring 5” tall x 11” wide, the 1908 Virginia was issued as a single plate and comes in a multitude of varieties. With two major “types”, one featuring a raised “VA” floating in the field of the plate, and the other featuring a lowered “VA” sitting along the bottom edge, variety collectors cite 9 different varieties of this license plate. #2282 specifically falls into the bucket of Type 2, Variety 5. Type 2, Variety 5 features a raised “VA”, an Ingram Richardson Manufacturing Company stamp on the reverse, an oval shaped period after “VA”, and a slanted font on the end of “#2’s”. The first state law in Virginia requiring vehicle registration and display of a license plate was passed in in early 1906 with registration beginning in June 1906. The issued license plates remained on cars until new plates were issued in 1910. With 67 documented examples, across the 2 types and 9 varieties, undated Virginia porcelains continue to be scarce and sought after. ALPCA’s PLATES Magazine issued in October 2020 cited the undated Virginia porcelain as an honorable mention (#67) in a ranking of the 40th rarest state issued passenger license plate in the United States. #2282 had been part of the following collections prior to Marc’s. -C.O. Baugher (ALPCA #413) who allegedly found #2282 in the rough-Mark Wallentine (ALPCA #7297)Condition Report:#2282 is in structurally sound all original condition. The plate lays flat. As is common on first issue Virginia plates, the black is slightly hazy and lacks mirror like gloss. There are numerous front side condition issues to report. -The plate features two added extra holes. 1. The first hole measuring 3/16” across is located to the right of the upper left slot. 2. The second hole measuring 3/16” across is located to the left of the upper right slot. 3. Both of these extra holes caused related enamel chipping outlined below.-There is a 1/2” x 1/4” enamel chip above the top left slot.-There is a 1” x 1” enamel chip stretching from above the top left slot along the top edge and downward clipping into the first “2”. This chip encompasses an extra hole. -There is a 1/4” x 1/8” enamel chip below the top left slot.-There is a 1 5/8” x 1/4” enamel chip running from the bottom left corner along the edge beneath the first “2”.-There is a 1/4” x 1/16” enamel chip along the bottom edge below the “8”.-There is a 1/4” x 1/16” enamel chip along the bottom edge below the third “2”.-There is a 1/8” x 1/16” enamel chip farther along the bottom edge below the third “2”.-There is a 1/8” x 1/8” enamel chip directly below the left side of the “A” along the bottom edge.-There is a 1 1/2” x 1/2” enamel chip along the bottom edge in the bottom right corner.-There is a 1” x 1/8” enamel chip along the right edge in the bottom right corner.-There is a 1 1/4” x 3/4” enamel chip in the top right corner almost fully surrounding the upper right slot.- There is a 1 1/14” x 1” enamel chip stretching left and under the upper right slot. This chip encompasses an extra hole.Despite these issues, this is an extremely displayable 1908 Virginia license plate. The license plate features wear including scratching, enamel loss, and rust resulting from period era use, aging, and storage.
